At the GWHS Scholarship Night, Hayden Niederreiter and Macey Schonbachler were selected as the 2015-2016 “Blazer of the Year”.
Macey was on the Volleyball team, Girls Basketball team and Softball team. Macey was a 2 year Varsity starter on the volleyball team. She led the team with an impressive 423 digs. She was named the defensive Player of the Year. In basketball, Macey was a 3 year varsity player. She earned 2nd team honors and was considered the most versatile player on the floor. Macey was a 3 year varsity player for GW softball. She has been captain for the last 2 years. Macey is 2nd in all hitting categories and is considered the best defensive outfielder. Macey is also involved in ASB, Link Crew, Captains Academy, Drama, Class President, Toys for Tots and Special Olympics. Macey will be heading off to Santa Barbara City College in the Fall, where she will continue her athletic endeavors in Volleyball.
Hayden was on the Boys Water polo team, Boys Basketball team and the Swim team. Some of Hayden’s accomplishments this year for Water polo include First Team All WYL, All County Team, All Valley Division 1 MVP, GWHS All American Award and was the recipient of the D1 Coiner Award for Sportsmanship. Hayden is a 3-year varsity starting goalie, that led the GWHS Boys Water Polo team to two consecutive Valley Championships (Division 2 in 2014 & Division 1 in 2015). Although suffering an injury during basketball season, Hayden came to practice every day and was selected as captain of the team. On the swim team, Hayden is one of the top freestyle sprinters in the WYL. Hayden is team captain in water polo, basketball and swim. Hayden is also involved in the Key Club, Captains Academy, Rally Club, FFA, FCA, ASB, and CSF. Hayden will be attending MIT in the fall, majoring in Biochemistry and playing water polo for the Beavers.
Each year, one male and one female senior athlete is voted on by GWHS head coaches to receive the “Blazer of the Year” Award. Macey & Hayden were presented with a plaque, a lifetime Golden West Athletic pass and a $500 scholarship. Their names will be placed on the banner in the GWHS gym along with all of the other previous recipients of “Blazer of the Year” since 1979.
