There could not have been a more exciting game! GWHS faced crosstown rival EDHS. They not only split games during regular season, they tied for first place in league and now came up against each other for one last game of 2016-17 to determine who would move onto the Valley Championship game. Unbelievable build-up to the game… and the game itself did not disappoint!
In the first period, both teams kept each other in check, while both keepers did a tremendous job of turning away shots on goal, to end the half scoreless. But in the second period, Miners struck first and fast, scoring in the first minute, The Trailblazers were able to answer back with a goal by Richard Chavez 10 minutes later. Both teams had more scoring opportunities, but neither found net for the rest of regulation time… Overtime!
After two 10 minute over time periods, followed by two five minute golden goal periods, the game would be determined by penalty kicks. After four attempts by each team, it was still tied with two of the four previous shooters scoring. It came down to the final shooter from each team. The Trailblazers selected goalkeeper Ramon Zarco to take the final kick… he scores! Then Ramon moves into the cage to receive, what could be, the final shot of the night.
Block…game over… GW wins… moves onto the Valley Championship Game… UNBELIEVABLE!
