This past week at Golden West was Military Appreciation Week (October 2-6)
Each branch of the Military was highlighted one day of the week during lunch (Mon – Army; Tues – Navy; Wed – Air Force; Thur – Marines; Fri – Game Day). Representatives from each branch was on campus to spark interest in their branch. Returning Varsity lettermen from the Football team took a tour of Lemoore NAS on Tuesday. On Wednesday, WWII Veterans came to Mr. Gostanian’s, Mr. Perez’, Mr. Peterson’s and Mr. Delgado’s social science classes bringing medals and memorabilia.
To honor our veterans at the GWHS football game on Friday, World War II Vets displayed “Shadow Boxes/Medals” on the entrance walkway of Groppetti Stadium where the vets greeted people and answered questions before the game.
Lemoore NAS Commanding Officer, Capt. David James tossed the coin for the Varsity Football game with Lemoore. Also, care packages from the Avid Class were presented to Captain James.
During halftime of the game, Elroy Newberry Sr., a Vietnam veteran and parent of two GW Alumni, held the American flag during the National Anthem surrounded by uniformed soldiers carrying the flags of their respective branches, which was followed by a ceremony honoring World War II veterans. The following veterans were in attendance that evening: Bud Erickson, Marines, WWII; Norris Jernigan, Air Force, WWII; Kent Perry, Navy, WWII; James Thompson, Navy, WWII; Herman Steinbach, Air Force, Korea; John Trask, Air Force, Korea; Robert Watkins, Navy, Korea; David DeLong, Navy, Vietnam; Bill Goodreau, Army, Vietnam; Art Vallejo, Navy, Vietnam
Donations from GW Athletics and Visalia Unified Teachers Association were presented to the Honor Flight Board of Directors to allow John Trask and Robert Watkins to go on the trip October 9-11.
