Golden West’s senior running back, Gonzalo Rodriguez, ran for 181 yards and three touchdowns in their 47-14 win over Mt. Whitney. That was not the only amazing part of the evening. It was a 25 yard touchdown run in the second quarter that helped him surpass the all-time rushing record for the city of Visalia. Going into the game, Gonzalo needed just 103 yards to put him ahead of the previous record of 4,183 yards set by El Diamante’s Wayne Jones in 2004-05.
The first high school football game in Visalia was played in 1895. But, when the final buzzer sounded at the end of the fourth quarter, it was Trailblazer, Gonzalo Rodriguez, who had bested every other running back who came before him to set a new Visalia rushing record totaling 4,261 yards!
This game was televised on KFRE CW59 as part of the “Friday Nigh Rivals” series. Gonzalo was chosen as the “Player of the Game” and was awarded a plaque and a little blue helmet for his accomplishments (see pictures below).
A huge congratulations to the Golden West football team and Gonzalo Rodriguez on a big win over MWHS and a record setting evening!
It’s a great time to be a TRAILBLAZER!!!
